Will I learn about music theory?
Yes, music theory is included in all lessons. We teach our pupils note values, how to read music, scales and how to approach sight-reading. This is important in knowing how to practice effectively.
Music theory for keyboard covers a range of topics that help pianists understand and interpret the language of music.
Note Reading:
Understanding musical notation, including the staff, clefs, and note values.
Identifying notes on the piano keyboard and associating them with their corresponding positions on the staff.
Rhythm and Meter:
Learning about different rhythmic patterns, including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and their corresponding rests.
Understanding time signatures and meters (e.g., 4/4, 3/4) and how they affect the rhythmic feel of a piece.
Scales and Key Signatures:
Studying major and minor scales and understanding their construction.
Learning key signatures and understanding how they affect the pitches within a piece.
Chords and Harmony:
Identifying and playing basic chords (triads) and their inversions.
Understanding chord progressions and harmonic analysis.
Intervals:
Recognising and playing intervals (the distance between two notes) on the piano.
Chord Progressions:
Analysing common chord progressions in different musical styles.
Learning how to create and recognise chord progressions by ear.
Form and Structure:
Understanding musical form, such as the structure of a piece (e.g., ABA form, sonata-allegro form).
Analysing the organisation of musical phrases and sections within a composition.
Ear Training:
Developing aural skills to identify and reproduce melodies, harmonies, and rhythms by ear.
Recognising intervals, chords, and progressions through listening exercises.
Technique:
Studying piano-specific techniques, including hand positions, fingerings, and pedalling.
Developing skills related to dynamics, articulation, and expression.
Sight-Reading:
Practising the ability to read and play music at first sight.
Repertoire:
Learning and performing a variety of pieces from different styles and historical periods.
Analysis:
Analysing musical scores to understand the composer’s intent and stylistic choices.
These topics provide a foundation for piano players to become well-rounded musicians who can not only read and interpret music but also understand the underlying principles that govern musical compositions. It’s important to note that music theory is a vast subject, and pianists often continue to deepen their understanding throughout their musical journey.
Age can be an advantage if you want to learn music theory, some of the finest students are above the age of 30 for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they have a wealth of life, learning experience and dedication.

Do I need to own a keyboard to start lessons?
Not at all! At Pro Music Tuition, we believe that nothing should hold you back from learning to play the keyboard, even if you don’t own one yet. If you’re attending lessons in person at one of our music schools across Birmingham and the Black Country, you’re welcome to use our in-house keyboards during your sessions.

Can I take keyboard exams through Pro Music?
Yes, absolutely! At Pro Music Tuition, we offer full support for keyboard students who want to work towards graded keyboard exams. Whether you’re aiming for Rockschool, ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), or Trinity College London, our experienced keyboard tutors will guide you every step of the way.

Our flexible and personalised approach means you can prepare at your own pace, while gaining the technical and musical skills needed to succeed in your chosen exam board.
How can I help my child to progress more quickly in their keyboard lessons?
One of the biggest problems with practice is that the child doesn’t understand what practice is and how to practice. Pro Music, we will relay all information to parents and pupils so they know exactly what to practice within the week. We can even provide videos and audio clips for the Pupil to follow. Another practice issue is that children sometimes fall out of routine. The child needs to have a routine, even if it’s three times a week. Getting into a routine is sometimes hard, but once controlled, new material each week will be absorbed more easily. Make sure they have a regular keyboard practice routine, 15-20 minutes a day will hold your child in good stead, re-learning elements from your child’s weekly keyboard lesson.
Are keyboard lessons available during evenings and weekends?
Absolutely! We offer flexible scheduling to fit around work, school, and family commitments. We offer keyboard lessons in the evenings and on weekends, giving our students the flexibility to learn at times that suit their schedule. Whether you’re balancing school, work, or family commitments, our friendly and experienced tutors are here to support your musical journey – whenever it’s most convenient for you.
How do online keyboard lessons work?
Our online keyboard lessons are designed to be just as engaging and effective as our in-person sessions. You’ll connect with one of our experienced keyboard tutors in real-time using Zoom or a similar live video platform. Each lesson is fully interactive, allowing you to receive immediate feedback, ask questions, and make steady progress at your own pace — all from the comfort of your home.
