Live Online Violin Lessons
Pro Music Tuition is delighted to offer online violin lessons, sometimes called virtual violin lessons, to students across the UK and further afield. Every violin lesson online is led by a DBS-checked tutor and delivered over Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook, whichever suits your household best.
Online violin tuition has grown into a well-established way to learn, valued for being every bit as thorough as lessons in one of our music schools. Families increasingly turn to online violin lessons when a trip to a music centre is not practical, and pupils benefit from more flexible scheduling and no time lost travelling with an instrument.

Online Violin Lesson FAQs
Are online violin lessons as effective as face-to-face lessons?
How well online violin lessons work depends on the individual learner, the quality of the teaching and the setup at home. A few things are worth weighing up.
Flexibility: online violin lessons remove the need to travel, so a lesson can be booked around school, work or family commitments with far less disruption to the day.
Tutor choice: because a violin lesson online is not tied to a single postcode, pupils can be matched with a tutor whose teaching style and specialism, whether that is classical repertoire, exam preparation or fiddle styles, best fits their goals.
Camera and screen work: a violin lesson relies heavily on the tutor seeing bow arm, hold and posture clearly, so lighting and camera position matter more for violin than for many other instruments, and your tutor will help you set this up correctly in your first session.
Self-motivation: online learning suits pupils who are comfortable practising independently between lessons, though our tutors set clear, structured goals each week to keep progress on track regardless of setting.
Most pupils find that online violin tuition and in-person violin lessons each suit different circumstances, and many families move between the two as life gets busier or quieter. If you are unsure which is right for you, our team is happy to talk through both options before you book.
What equipment do I need for online violin lessons?
You will need a laptop, tablet or smartphone with a working camera and microphone, along with Zoom, WhatsApp or Facebook for the call. A laptop or tablet propped at a slight distance usually gives your tutor the clearest view of your bow arm and left hand position. A stable Wi-Fi connection matters too, so the picture does not freeze mid-lesson; if your signal is patchy, an Ethernet cable plugged straight into your router will usually give a steadier connection than Wi-Fi alone.
You do not need to own a professional instrument to start online violin lessons. Violins are sized by fraction, from 1/16 up to full size, so younger beginners will need a correctly sized instrument rather than a scaled-down adult violin. If you are not sure which size is right, your tutor can advise during your first lesson, or you are welcome to call our team beforehand for guidance on hire or purchase.
Do online violin lessons work well for young children?
Yes, though pupils around 5 to 7 years old generally do best with a parent nearby to help keep them focused and to manage bows, rosin and any teaching materials during the lesson. Our tutors are experienced at keeping online violin lessons for kids engaging, using games, familiar tunes and short, varied activities to suit shorter attention spans. Pupils of all ages learn online with us every week from across the UK and beyond, progressing at their own pace with the same attentive teaching as a lesson at one of our music schools.
How is my child kept safe during online violin lessons?
We know that finding a music teacher you can fully trust matters, particularly for online lessons. Every Pro Music tutor is DBS-checked, and the majority hold a music degree, with some also qualified teachers. Our tutors complete regular safeguarding training, so online safety is treated with the same seriousness as it would be during an in-person violin lesson at one of our music schools.
Can a tutor correct my bowing and posture through a screen?
Yes. Our violin tutors are trained to assess technique closely on camera and can identify and correct common issues with bow hold, bow arm movement, left hand position and overall posture just as they would in the room with you. Once your camera is angled correctly, usually a little further back than pupils expect, your tutor gets a full view of both arms and the instrument throughout the lesson, and can listen closely to tone and intonation through your device’s microphone.
How do I get the best sound quality for an online violin lesson?
A few small adjustments in Zoom make a real difference to how clearly your tutor can hear your playing. Open your audio settings before the lesson starts and turn off “automatically adjust microphone volume”, since this feature can quieten the violin’s natural dynamics. Set background noise suppression to low, so the software does not mistake your playing for interference, and enable “Original Sound” from the microphone once your lesson has begun, choosing “high fidelity music mode” only if you have a wired internet connection. These settings, once in place, tend to stay saved for future online violin lessons.
How much do online violin lessons cost, and is the first lesson free?
Online violin lessons are available in 30, 60 and 90-minute sessions to suit different budgets and stages of learning, with weekly lessons recommended for steady progress. Please note that, unlike some of our other instruments, violin and vocal lessons are not included in our free first lesson offer for under-15s; however, we are happy to discuss a taster session so you can meet your tutor before committing to a course of lessons. We ask for 24 hours’ notice for any rescheduling.

Do you teach complete beginners in online violin lessons?
Absolutely. Most of our new pupils each year are complete beginners, and our tutors are experienced at introducing the violin from first principles, whether the goal is grade exams with ABRSM, Trinity College London or Rockschool, or simply learning for enjoyment. We deliver online violin teaching over Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook, and being experienced remote teachers, we bring the same standard of tuition into your home as pupils receive at one of our music schools, without the travel time or the need to transport an instrument.
