Kids’ Violin Lessons in Sutton Coldfield

We teach children from the age of 5 and up. As well as playing popular songs, we also teach music theory and scales in order to provide a well-rounded education. We tailor the lesson programme to suit the skill level and aims of each individual child. If pupils want to work towards exams, this is also an option, as well as playing in our live showcases that take place three times a year.

Whatever age and whether learning through group or individual tuition, we offer to train pupils for exams. Working towards a goal like this can help teach children to focus, and the sense of achievement when passing grades is always a thrill. We work with several different syllabuses, including ABRSMTrinity and Rockschool. If you have previously learned pieces for an exam elsewhere, we can provide the exam for you (excluding ABRSM).

Sutton Coldfield Violin Lesson Testimonials

Highley recommend the violin teacher

“Highly recommend Chloe as a violin teacher. Patient, friendly and knowledgeable. My daughter looks forward to her weekly Violin lesson.”

Louise O

Excellent violin teacher

“As an adult learner who used to play the Violin as a child, I found Gemma to be an excellent violin teacher who understands my aspirations, current skills and potential. She plays the violin as I have never heard before – very lively and soothing. She also teaches cello and piano, and what impressed me is the piano accompaniment she does with me when I play any violin piece. She assessed me as playing at grade 3 (Trinity School Music), and I am going to put everything I learned into practice every day. Thank you so much, Gemma, at Pro Music Sutton Coldfield

Clare

Great progress in violin lessons

“My 6-year-old has been taking violin lessons with Gemma for almost 2 months now, and I’m pleased with the progress she’s made in such a short time. Gemma’s violin lessons are relaxed but engaging and tend to follow the child’s lead, which keeps my daughter interested and enjoying her lessons. We both look forward to the lesson each week, and I would recommend Pro Music Boldmere to anyone considering music lessons.”

Emma Kelly

encouraging violin lessons

My 6-year-old daughter and I have recently started having lessons together; she is learning the piano, and I’m returning to the violin. Tom was great and super efficient from our first enquiry; he got us booked straight away on the day and time that we needed. Our instructor Lily teaches us both in one lesson. She is amazing, so kind and encouraging! Excited to be having music lessons and can’t wait to see our progress. Thanks again!

“My kids had their first online violin and piano lesson through Zoom last Thursday, and they had a great time with Sophie. She’s brilliant, patient and a very good teacher. I recommend her and, of course, Pro Music. “

Amazing violin lessons

Amazing violin lessons with Chenille! As an adult beginner, I was apprehensive, but Chenille put me at ease straight away with her friendly and gentle manner! She is targeting the lessons to my needs, and my progress is swift. I highly, highly recommend it. Feels like I have made a friend as well as gained a great violin tutor!”

Violin Lesson FAQS

At what age should my child start violin lessons?

Most children start violin lessons at our Sutton Coldfield studios around the age of 5, though some begin as young as 3. Because violins come in fractional sizes, from a tiny 1/16 right up to full size, we can match the instrument to your child’s height and reach at any age. The best way to know if your child is ready is to book a free taster session in Boldmere or Wylde Green, where one of our violin teachers can assess them in person.

How much should I practise the violin each day?

For adult learners, 30 minutes to an hour a day is ideal if you want to progress at a satisfying pace, though even 15 focused minutes is far better than nothing on a busy day. For children, we recommend around 15 minutes daily, building to 30 to 45 minutes when they are preparing for a grade exam. With the violin, short and regular always beats long and occasional, because intonation and bow control come from consistent repetition rather than the odd marathon session.

What type of violin should I buy as a beginner?

What violin should I buy as a beginner?

You do not need to spend a lot to start well. A budget brand such as Windsor offers a perfectly good tone for beginners and intermediates up to around Grade 5, and it is comfortable to handle while you build technique. The most important thing is getting the right size, so we are always happy to advise before you buy, and we can provide an instrument for lessons if you would prefer to try before committing.

Ask our Sutton Coldfield violin teachers for advice

Do you teach adults to play the violin?

Yes. Alongside children, we teach a great many adult violin students in Sutton Coldfield, from complete beginners to returners picking the instrument back up after years away. Learning the violin has far more to do with mindset than age. Thanks to neuroplasticity your brain forms new pathways at any stage of life, and many adults find that regular practice keeps the mind sharp as well as being genuinely enjoyable. Lessons are tailored entirely to your goals, whether that is playing for pleasure or working towards a grade.

Can I take online violin lessons instead?

Yes. If getting to Boldmere or Wylde Green is difficult, we deliver live online violin lessons over Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook, to the same standard as our in-person teaching. Online lessons remove travel time, open up more flexible scheduling, and work well for violinists of all ages. Many of our students mix in-person and online lessons depending on the week.

Do your students get an opportunity to perform?

Yes, we hold three showcases per year. There are 4 to 5 concerts which involve many musicians of all levels who simply want to perform effectively. We roughly have about 400 to 500 in the audience and is always an enjoyable evening.

Do you teach violin students preparing for grade exams?

Yes. We prepare violin students for exams with ABRSM, Trinity and RSL Rockschool, and we build the syllabus into lessons at a pace that suits each student. Exams are entirely optional though. Plenty of our Sutton Coldfield students learn purely for enjoyment, and we structure their lessons around the music they want to play.
