What Is LAMDA?

What Do LAMDA Exams Cover?

LAMDA examinations span two broad categories: Communication and Performance. Within those, students can specialise in a range of disciplines depending on their interests and goals.

Acting

LAMDA acting exams develop students’ vocal and physical expression, stage presence and understanding of theatrical texts through dramatic performance. This is often the natural entry point for students who love drama, and the skills built reach well beyond the stage.

Speaking Verse and Prose

These exams focus on the interpretation and delivery of poetry and prose. Students develop vocal clarity, articulation and the ability to bring written language to life. It deepens their relationship with literature and sharpens the ability to communicate with genuine feeling.

Speaking in Public

LAMDA public speaking exams are one of the most directly practical disciplines on offer, covering everything from structured presentations to impromptu speaking. Musical Theatre

These exams focus on bringing written texts to life through expressive reading. Students work on vocal variety, pacing and interpretation, developing the ability to hold a listener’s attention through the spoken word alone.

LAMDA reviews and updates its LAMDA syllabus regularly to ensure qualifications reflect current performance and communication practice. A new Group Acting syllabus became effective in January 2025, with updated specifications for Musical Theatre and the PCertLAM (Professional Certificate in Teaching LAMDA) launching in August 2025.

Why Do LAMDA Exams Matter?

We are asked by parents all the time whether LAMDA exams are worth it. In our experience, the answer is almost always yes, though perhaps not always for the reasons people first expect.

The qualification itself carries genuine value. LAMDA qualifications are Ofqual-regulated, and at the higher LAMDA grades, students earn UCAS points that count towards university applications. But the benefits that tend to matter most to students and their families are more personal than that.
