Music, and indeed sound, whether we notice it or not, is an omnipresent force in our lives. Sometimes it’s a specific song or a specific piece of music that has the power to take us back to a specific moment in time. Other times, it’s something as small as a specific sound, like the slam of a car door or the running of water.

Either way, music and indeed all art has the power to become an all consuming backdrop to our lives and therefore, as musicians, we are partly responsible for forming powerful memories for our audiences. The right music at the right time has the power to connect in a way that last forever and can change the course of an individual’s life. And that should be the goal as a musician: to leave an indelible mark, to change the world and the people in it for the better.

Even in the earliest moments of civilisation, music was a tool that shaped our existence and allowed us to communicate or entertain, and that has never changed. Whenever you perform, teach, consume or create art, this, I believe should be at the forefront of our minds and our goals: how can we change the lives of our audiences for the better, even in some small way?
