Live Online Woodwind Lessons
Pro Music Tuition is delighted to offer online woodwind lessons for students learning cello, flute and clarinet, welcoming pupils across the UK and further afield. Every lesson is led by a DBS-checked specialist tutor and delivered live over Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp or Facebook, matching the standard of our in-person woodwind and string lessons without the need to travel to a music school.
Online Cello lessons, online flute lessons and online clarinet lessons have grown in popularity as a flexible way to keep progressing between visits to a music school, or as a complete alternative to face-to-face tuition. Learning online also removes the need to transport a delicate instrument, giving families more choice over lesson times.

Online Woodwind Lesson FAQs
Are online woodwind lessons as effective as face-to-face lessons?
How well online woodwind lessons work compared with face-to-face teaching depends on the individual student, their instrument and their stage of learning. A few points are worth considering.
Convenience: online cello, flute and clarinet lessons offer greater flexibility around school, college or work, which can make it easier to stay consistent with practise between lessons.
Tutor choice: learning online can widen the pool of specialist woodwind tutors available to you, rather than being limited to those based near a particular music school.
Technology: video calling allows a tutor to demonstrate fingering, breathing and posture on screen, and to record short clips for the student to review afterwards.
Self-motivation: online learning suits students who are comfortable practising independently between sessions, while others may prefer the structure of an in-person lesson.
Many Pro Music pupils combine both formats, and our tutors are happy to advise on which approach suits a particular student best.
What instrument and equipment will I need for online woodwind lessons?
You will need your own cello, flute or clarinet, along with a laptop, tablet or smartphone and a stable internet connection for Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook. A laptop or tablet propped at a slight distance usually gives the clearest view of hand position and posture, and a simple stand or music holder frees up both hands for playing. For reed instruments, keep a couple of spare reeds to hand, since these wear out with regular practise.
If your Wi-Fi signal is weak, an Ethernet adaptor connected directly to your router can improve stability during a lesson. If you are unsure which instrument to buy or hire before your first lesson, your tutor can offer guidance based on your age, budget and goals.
What is the minimum age to start online woodwind lessons?
We generally recommend a minimum age of around eight for cello, flute and clarinet, since woodwind instruments require enough lung capacity, finger stretch and embouchure control to get a stable sound. Younger children often progress well on piano, guitar or keyboard first before moving across to a woodwind instrument. Every child develops at a different pace, so if you are unsure whether your son or daughter is ready, our tutors are happy to discuss this with you before booking a first online lesson.
How is my child protected during online woodwind lessons?
We understand that trusting a new tutor with online lessons can feel like a big step, so peace of mind matters. All Pro Music tutors are DBS checked, and the majority hold a music degree, with some also qualified teachers. Our tutors complete regular safeguarding and online safety training, and a parent or guardian is welcome to remain present throughout any online lesson, particularly for younger woodwind students.
Can a tutor assess embouchure, breathing and tone through a screen?
Yes. Our woodwind tutors are experienced at teaching remotely and can observe embouchure, hand position and posture clearly once a camera is angled correctly, usually from the side or at a slight distance so fingers and mouth are both visible. Tone and breath support are assessed by ear through the call, and tutors will often ask a student to play a passage more than once or adjust the camera to check technique from a different angle. Many tutors also record short reference videos so pupils can compare their playing against a demonstration between lessons.
Do you teach cello, flute and clarinet online, and can I try more than one?
Yes, we offer dedicated online cello lessons, online flute lessons and online clarinet lessons, taught by tutors who specialise in that instrument. Some students choose to focus on a single instrument, while others, particularly those working towards a wider music qualification, take lessons across two woodwind instruments or alongside piano, guitar or vocal coaching. Speak to our team about your goals, and we can match you with the right tutor or tutors.
Which exam boards do you prepare online woodwind students for?
We prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity College London and Rockschool graded exams, and our tutors will guide you through the right syllabus and repertoire for your instrument and current level. Online lessons work well for exam preparation, since tutors can focus closely on the set pieces, scales and aural requirements for each grade, and adjust the pace as an exam date approaches.

How much do online woodwind lessons cost?
Lesson prices vary depending on length and instrument, with 30-, 60- and 90- minute online cello, flute and clarinet lessons available. The first lesson is free for children under 15, excluding Violin and Vocals, so you can try a session with your tutor before committing further.
Do you teach complete beginners online woodwind lessons?
Yes, many of our online woodwind pupils are complete beginners. We deliver lessons via Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp or Facebook and are experienced in remote teaching, so a student picking up a saxophone, flute or clarinet for the first time receives the same grounding in posture, embouchure and technique as they would in person. Learning online also removes travel time and widens the range of lesson times available, making it easier to find a slot that works for the whole family.
