Will I learn about music theory?
Yes, music theory is included in all lessons. We teach our pupils note values, how to read music, scales and how to approach sight-reading. This is important in knowing how to practice effectively.
Music theory for piano covers a range of topics that help pianists understand and interpret the language of music.
Note Reading:
Understanding musical notation, including the staff, clefs, and note values.
Identifying notes on the piano keyboard and associating them with their corresponding positions on the staff.
Rhythm and Meter:
Learning about different rhythmic patterns, including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and their corresponding rests.
Understanding time signatures and meters (e.g., 4/4, 3/4) and how they affect the rhythmic feel of a piece.
Scales and Key Signatures:
Studying major and minor scales and understanding their construction.
Learning key signatures and understanding how they affect the pitches within a piece.
Chords and Harmony:
Identifying and playing basic chords (triads) and their inversions.
Understanding chord progressions and harmonic analysis.
Intervals:
Recognising and playing intervals (the distance between two notes) on the piano.
Chord Progressions:
Analysing common chord progressions in different musical styles.
Learning how to create and recognise chord progressions by ear.
Form and Structure:
Understanding musical form, such as the structure of a piece (e.g., ABA form, sonata-allegro form).
Analysing the organisation of musical phrases and sections within a composition.
Ear Training:
Developing aural skills to identify and reproduce melodies, harmonies, and rhythms by ear.
Recognising intervals, chords, and progressions through listening exercises.
Technique:
Studying piano-specific techniques, including hand positions, fingerings, and pedalling.
Developing skills related to dynamics, articulation, and expression.
Sight-Reading:
Practising the ability to read and play music at first sight.
Repertoire:
Learning and performing a variety of pieces from different styles and historical periods.
Analysis:
Analysing musical scores to understand the composer’s intent and stylistic choices.
These topics provide a foundation for piano players to become well-rounded musicians who can not only read and interpret music but also understand the underlying principles that govern musical compositions. It’s important to note that music theory is a vast subject, and pianists often continue to deepen their understanding throughout their musical journey.
Age can be an advantage if you want to learn music theory, some of the finest students are above the age of 30 for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they have a wealth of life, learning experience and dedication.

Do you teach adults to play the piano?
Yes, at Pro Music we teach hundreds of adult learners each week. Many adults like to start learning with their children as it is an activity they can enjoy together. We teach hundreds of adults without children who have always had the desire to learn and feel it’s now time to do something they have always wanted. We start adults as novices or can take over from other existing teachers/ music schools. We can start gradings or leisure play; Pro Music is very flexible with the times. We have many slots to suit adults who work shiftwork/home or even 9-to-5.
How Long Does It Take an Adult to Learn How to Play the Piano?
It is dependent on a variety of things, such as how quickly you learn, what kind of musical background you have, and whether or not you have the time to practise regularly. You will be able to pick up the piano extremely fast, to the point where it might only take you two years to be at the same level with your piano playing if, for instance, you have already played the violin to a grade equivalent to Grade 8; in this case, you will be able to transfer your knowledge from the violin to the piano. If you are just starting, you should anticipate that it will take you at least five years of consistent play to reach the same level.
The duration of the process is also contingent on the type of training that you are receiving. If you are working with an exceptional and experienced teacher who can very quickly notice your mistakes and fix them, in addition to the repertoire that you are interested in and that will help you progress, you will learn rapidly. This is because the teacher will be able to immediately spot your mistakes and correct them. If you are working with a teacher who is not interested in your personal development or who does not have a great deal of experience teaching complete novices then your progress will go at a much more glacial pace.
How long will it be before I can play the piano well?
Unfortunately, the true answer to this question is “it depends.” The journey of learning the piano will never come to an end; as long as you continue to play, you will always be able to improve your skills. Even the most accomplished concert pianists continue to hone their craft throughout their careers. I will state that this process is frequently completed more quickly by children than it is by adults. This is for the same reason that youngsters are able to acquire new languages more easily; their brains are more adaptable. That is not to argue that adults are incapable of achieving a level of competence: rather, it only means that they may require more time to do so.
However, in order to give you a general idea of what to anticipate for your level after a particular length of time has passed, below is an approximate estimate. These estimates are derived from the perspective of an adult novice who has never picked up a piano or any other musical instrument in the past.
Beginner One year
After around a year of practice, you should be at the level of a beginner. This would probably correspond to the Grade 1 or 2 level on the ABRSM scale. You should be able to play relatively simple compositions and have a fair grasp of learning from sheet music, playing basic one-octave scales, and other musical fundamentals.
Intermediate – Three to four years at a minimum
After somewhere between three and four years, you should be at this level of proficiency. You should expect to be playing at a level roughly equivalent to Grade 4 or 5 (ABRSM). At this point, you should have a good understanding of more advanced ideas, such as sightreading, more complicated rhythmic patterns, and scales in most keys up to two or three octaves. At this point, you should feel comfortable learning individual pieces on your own without the need to rely on a teacher; however, you should still anticipate receiving most of your direction from your instructor or tutor.
Advanced – Between five and ten years
You should plan on reaching this level after a minimum of five years and up to ten years of effort. You should be playing at a level equivalent to at least Grade 8 on the ABRSM scale by this point. You should have no trouble sightreading works that are around three to four grades below your current level of playing. You need to be familiar with scales, arpeggios, broken chords, and other techniques in each key. At this point, you should feel completely at ease selecting your own repertoire and studying works on your own without assistance.
Child-friendly piano lessons in the West Midlands led by qualified local piano tutors
How can I help my child to progress more quickly in their piano lessons?
One of the biggest problems with practice is the child doesn’t understand what practice is and how to practice. Pro Music we will relay all information to parents and pupils so they know exactly what to practice within the week. We can even provide videos and audio clips for the Pupil to follow. Another practice issue is that children sometimes fall out of routine. The child needs to have a routine, even if it’s three times a week. Getting into a routine is sometimes hard but once controlled new material each week will absorb easier. Make sure they have a regular practice routine, 15-20 minutes a day will hold your child in good stead, re-learning elements from your child’s weekly lesson.
Some more tips to encourage your child
Encourage Regular Practice:
- Establish a consistent practice routine. Daily practice, even if it’s for a short duration, is more effective than sporadic longer sessions. 15-20 minutes a day will hold your child in good stead.
- Help your child set specific goals for each practice session. Revising elements from your child’s weekly lesson. Piano Tutors at Pro Music can help you design this.
Provide a Suitable Practice Space:
- Ensure that your child has a comfortable and quiet space to practice without distractions.
- Keep the piano easily accessible so they can practice whenever they have some free time.
Supportive Environment:
- Create a positive and supportive atmosphere. Encourage your child, and avoid putting too much pressure on them.
- Celebrate their achievements and progress, no matter how small.
Supervise and Participate:
- Sit in on their practice sessions occasionally to show interest and provide positive feedback.
- If you play the piano, consider playing together. This can make practice more enjoyable.
Choose the Right Teacher:
- Ensure your child has a good piano teacher who understands their learning style and can tailor lessons accordingly.
- Communicate with the piano teacher regularly to stay informed about your child’s progress and discuss any concerns.
Expose Them to Different Genres:
- Introduce your child to a variety of musical genres. This can broaden their musical horizons and make learning more interesting.
Set Realistic Expectations:
- Help your child set realistic short-term and long-term goals. This can motivate them to continue practising and progressing.
Incorporate Music Theory:
- Introduce basic music theory concepts will help your child understand the structure of music. This can enhance their overall understanding and proficiency.
Attend Live Performances:
- Take your child to live music performances or watch them together online. This can inspire and motivate them to improve their skills.
I already play another instrument. Will this help with learning piano?
Absolutely! If you already play an instrument, it can make learning the piano even easier. At Pro Music Tuition, we encourage students to explore multiple instruments. Many of our piano students also take lessons in guitar, drums, or singing each week.
Playing more than one instrument helps build stronger musical skills, boosts confidence, and sharpens your ear for music. It also improves your understanding of rhythm, melody, and harmony — all of which are key to becoming a great pianist.
We also offer discounts for students learning more than one instrument with us. If you’re unsure which path to take next, our experienced team is here to guide you. Moving from piano lessons to steel pans, or from electric guitar to bass, can feel like a natural next step with the right support.
